After buying the property, Ine and Charles commissioned Atelier Vens Vanbelle to renovate it. A reproduction of a painting is printed on the entrance façade, while red soffits, blue brick walls and slender black columns appear across the front carport and rear extension. ![Poolside terrace and loungers beneath red eaves](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061700-QKpYqXRY.webp!dis) Red eaves cover the poolside terrace, with loungers and seating outside the glass walls. ![Glass walls, red ceiling and pool at dusk](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061705-TsJOgEJ9.webp!dis) At dusk, the red ceiling continues from the interior beneath the eaves, with glazing facing the pool. ## Moving the living spaces to the rear The architects reconfigured the ground floor of the existing house to accommodate a bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, entrance hall, laundry facilities and office space. The main living spaces moved into the rear extension, closer to the garden. From the old house, the extension begins with a narrow kitchen and dining area. Folding windows along one side of the kitchen open fully onto the terrace, beside a long, narrow pool extending towards the rear garden. Further back, the living and dining area sits slightly above the kitchen, terrace and original house. Glazing provides views of the garden, and the room opens onto another outdoor terrace. ![Yellow kitchen ceiling and open folding windows](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061709-oUSUsFhS.webp!dis) The kitchen sits beside the terrace, with white pendants beneath a yellow ceiling and the folding side windows fully open. ![New poolside spaces and the original house façade](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061714-wKIoB2s2.webp!dis) New living spaces stand on one side of the pool; the two-storey façade of the original house is visible on the other. ![Seating and lawn beneath red eaves](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061719-5K4LzH6G.webp!dis) Seating runs along the wall beneath the red eaves, and the terrace opens towards the lawn. ![Corner glazing and terrace beside the pool](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061723-S55qneaR.webp!dis) Outside the corner glazing lies the poolside terrace, with the red soffit reflected in the water. ![Blue-edged kitchen cabinetry, stools and pendants](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061729-Wf2U2tYJ.webp!dis) Blue lines edge the white kitchen cabinetry, with stools and pendant lights beneath the yellow ceiling. ## Entering through a door in a painting A new carport stands in front of the old house, partially screening its original façade. It has blue glazed-brick walls, black columns and a red soffit. The bicycle store is faced with Dibond panels printed with an enlarged reproduction of De Clerck’s painting Roger and Zulma Visiting. The door depicted in the painting marks the entrance to the renovated house. ![Reproduced painting and doorway at the entrance](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061733-V9LqIA3X.webp!dis) A reproduction of a painting is printed on panels beside the entrance, where the painted door meets the actual doorway. ![Carport with blue brick walls, black columns and red soffit](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061737-TZln9AED.webp!dis) Slender black columns, a red soffit and blue glazed-brick walls form the front carport, with the original façade behind. ## Red eaves, yellow kitchen The renovation replaced the pitched roof with a flat one; the extension and carport also have flat roofs. Glass walls face the rear garden, and coloured ceilings continue beyond the glazing beneath the eaves, covering outdoor seating and circulation areas. Interior walls and cabinetry are predominantly white, black and grey. Red and yellow are used mainly on ceilings, with blue appearing on some brick walls and cabinet edges. White pendants hang beneath the yellow kitchen ceiling, while a white brick fireplace stands below the red ceiling. Steps connect the kitchen to the raised living and dining area, with different floor finishes on either side. A planted area runs along the edge of the level change. From the kitchen, the fireplace, dining table and glazing facing the garden are visible together. ![Pool and rear living space beneath red eaves](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061741-zfLDwNQB.webp!dis) The rear living space faces the pool, with two loungers beneath the red eaves. ![Terraces and chairs at the ends of the pool](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061746-p3wlMiLm.webp!dis) The pool extends towards the rear garden, with chairs and planting on the terraces to either side. ![White brick fireplace beneath a red ceiling](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061751-WO0JfGez.webp!dis) A white brick fireplace stands beneath the red ceiling, with horizontal joints visible in the black-and-white cabinetry behind. ![Red and yellow ceilings, black wall and white cabinetry](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061754-9AZlkFqm.webp!dis) Red and yellow ceilings meet on either side of a black wall, with white cabinet doors fitted close to the ceiling. ![Glazed extension and original house at dusk](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061759-A4U0DftM.webp!dis) At dusk, a flat roof extends over the glass walls of the addition, with the original house behind. ![Living spaces and terrace beside the pool](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061803-M5aeibFh.webp!dis) The poolside living space adjoins the terrace, with the yellow kitchen ceiling visible behind. ![Steps between the kitchen and raised living and dining area](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061808-HCfoDKMA.webp!dis) Steps connect the kitchen’s brick floor to the raised living and dining area, with planting along the edge of the level change. ![Round table and chandelier beneath a red ceiling](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061812-GAEGbLeQ.webp!dis) A chandelier hangs above the round dining table, beside the kitchen with its yellow ceiling. ## The garden beyond the glass With the kitchen’s folding windows open, the terrace and pool can be seen directly from inside. Corner glazing in the living area faces the lawn, and the red ceiling continues outside beneath the eaves. Photographer Tim Van de Velde and the design team produced a series of photographs with people in the spaces, drawing on Slim Aarons’s Poolside Gossip and David Hockney’s A Bigger Splash as references for the shoot. People sit beneath the eaves or pause by the windows, pictured alongside the surrounding pool and terraces. ![Glazed living space and red eaves beside the lawn](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061816-5D8E90yO.webp!dis) Seen from the lawn, the red soffit projects out along the glazed walls of the new living space. ![Old and new parts of the house beside the pool at dusk](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061821-9teb62u5.webp!dis) Terraces connect the old and new volumes on either side of the pool, with interior lighting illuminating the rooms behind the glazing. ![Rear façade with flat roof and red soffit](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061825-OOKD4fAa.webp!dis) A flat roof, glass walls and red soffit form the rear façade, with the pool immediately beside the terrace. ![View from the pool towards the terrace and yellow kitchen](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061829-fIH7MTF1.webp!dis) Looking across from the pool, the kitchen cabinetry and yellow ceiling are clearly visible behind the folding windows. ![White cabinetry against a black wall and the side of the fireplace](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-061833-cnknMZSj.webp!dis) White cabinetry stands against a black wall, with one side of the white brick fireplace visible in front. > Atelier Vens Vanbelle moved the living spaces towards the garden and incorporated the painter’s work into the renovation: a door in a painting marks the actual entrance, while red, yellow and blue appear on eaves, ceilings and brick walls.
