### [Good Times General Store: Reimagining a Shop in Bali](https://01des.com/en/project/3545) **Published:** 2026-10-27T14:04:07 **Author:** 01DES Editor **Excerpt:** In Seminyak, Bali, OMA and Potato Head have designed Go… COMMERCIAL · SEMINYAK, BALI Good Times General Store sits within Desa Potato Head, between the hotel and the beach club. Potato Head’s first dedicated retail space sells craft objects, clothing and furniture, and visitors can also join workshops in the store. The project is a collaboration between OMA and Potato Head, where Ade Herkarisma is Head of Architecture and Development. ![Dyed fabric unfolded beside a circular worktable and successive doorways](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135235-xczgdtdX.webp!dis) People unfold dyed fabric beside a circular worktable, with successive doorways opening into adjoining rooms. ![Timber entrance beneath a slatted canopy with red display units](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135242-MweWs4sF.webp!dis) Wide timber doors sit beneath a slatted canopy, framing red display units and doorways beyond. ## Through the thatched façade The building uses local alang-alang thatch, rammed clay earth, bamboo and reclaimed timber. Thatch, more commonly used for roofing, clads the exterior walls, while the rammed earth has both smooth and rough surfaces. Timber frames, dark doorways and wall openings recur through adjoining rooms, offering views of displays and seating from the entrance. Recycled bamboo offcuts are incorporated into the terrazzo floor. Segmented earthen blocks with openings stand inside the store. Passages run between them, and the openings reveal neighbouring areas. ![Pale brown walls and planting beside a timber-framed opening](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135250-eQvtnXuV.webp!dis) Pale brown walls surround a timber-framed opening, with planting of varying heights outside. ![Timber entrance between rough-textured walls with a stair to one side](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135254-N7YKwfGs.webp!dis) A timber entrance is set between rough-textured walls, with a stair to the upper level on the left. ## Five areas, from display to making The store’s five areas connect to one another. The first presents craft objects, books and records by independent makers from Indonesia and beyond; the second displays Potato Head clothing and travel essentials. Clothing rails sit close to the walls, leaving the centre for seating and low tables where visitors can rest. The third area houses Wasted, a collection of furniture and homeware developed by Potato Head with British designer Max Lamb using discarded plastic and other recycled materials. Chairs stand on block-like plinths of different heights, with views through doorways into the rooms beyond. The fourth area is a natural dye studio, and the fifth is used for plastic moulding and material experiments. The displays connect to the workshops, so visitors can browse products and take part in making activities along the way. ![Red display units with circular recesses and successive doorways](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135301-pY2AdQyi.webp!dis) Red display units with circular recesses line both sides of the passage, while successive doorways lead towards seating beyond. ![Curved seats and clothing rails in the apparel area](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135304-DJe1uPyp.webp!dis) Clothing hangs along the walls on either side, with two curved seats and low tables in the centre. ![Chairs on block-like plinths and a black door frame](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135440-hoWr3U5D.webp!dis) Chairs sit on block-like plinths, with red display units and seating visible beyond a black door frame. ![Different chairs on block-like plinths with a circular worktable beyond](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135444-M5BFUxvp.webp!dis) Chairs of different designs stand on staggered block-like plinths; a circular worktable is visible through the doorway beyond. ![Circular worktable with inset containers and wooden frames hung with fabric](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135506-cHaiijqh.webp!dis) Several containers are set into the circular worktable, with pale strips of fabric hanging from wooden frames on either side. ![Dyed fabric unfolded beside a circular worktable and successive doorways](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135508-zHpJStsd.webp!dis) People unfold dyed fabric beside a circular worktable, with successive doorways opening into adjoining rooms. ![Curved seats and a low table in front of shelves displaying vessels](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135511-BLAYoQ7X.webp!dis) Two curved seats and a low table occupy the centre. Another experimental area displays shredded high-density polyethylene (HDPE), sourced through waste-collection networks in Bali and Java for plastic moulding and material experiments. The store’s workshops are also linked to the resort’s existing Waste Lab and Follow the Waste Tour. The former researches ways to turn leftover materials and waste into new products; the latter introduces visitors to how materials move through the resort. ![Sewing machines on a long table and coloured material samples on the wall](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135526-BWGNimm1.webp!dis) Sewing machines line a long table, with coloured material samples displayed in a grid on the wall behind. ![Wooden loom and seat beside tall windows](https://cdn.01des.com/uploads/2026/10/20261027-135534-YJjTvfd6.webp!dis) A wooden loom stands beside tall windows, with a seat nearby. The use of local materials and the reuse of waste inform the store’s design, from the building itself to the making activities inside.
