The Total Concept of Space

Masamichi Katayama is the founder and principal of Wonderwall, the interior design firm he established in Tokyo in 2000. The studio works across retail, hospitality, residences, commercial complexes and branded environments.

Katayama develops what Wonderwall calls a total concept: architecture, interiors, objects and brand experience are coordinated to make a client’s vision spatially legible.

Retail Beyond Display

The practice is especially influential in retail design, where circulation, visual rhythm and moments of discovery are treated as part of the brand rather than as a neutral container for products.

His approach respects established design traditions while remaining willing to cross boundaries. The result is often energetic and memorable, but grounded in business function and the subconscious experience of occupants.
